SIGNS & WONDERS was a Wrights & Sites satellite project taking place over four days in Lancaster and Pendle District exploring the transformation of objects and ideas, and pointing to key locations and evidences associated with the Witch Trials.
Simon Persighetti, Phil Smith and Katie Etheridge will be staging a series of walking performances and interventions in city and landscape. Legs and feet and walking are key to this story. The whole case started with an encounter between a travelling pedlar and a girl on the road. One of the women convicted in 1612 of witchcraft, Katherine Hewitt, was referred to as ‘mould heels’. Feet as our connection with the earth. This story walks.
We are using the idea of the pedlar as a carrier of multiple viewpoints- walking and traveling; we will be peddling ideas, through trade, exchange and conversations. Along city streets, in the marketplace and down country tracks we will distribute strange tokens and wondrous pamphlets.
